The Census of Housing began in 1940, but a little bit of information about housing values and conditions may be found in earlier censuses. The questions asked change over time, e.g., the 1960 Census of Housing was the first one to ask about air conditioning.

The American Housing Survey began in 1973 and doesn't provide state-level data because it only surveys a small number of metropolitan areas on a recurring basis. Miami is covered 8 times between 1975 and 2007. Orlando is covered in 1974, 1977, and 1981. Tampa-St.Petersburg is covered 5 times between 1985 and 2007.
